LURE OF MINIATURES
Miniatures have a way of drawing us in, just by virtue of their small size and intricate details. There is a special intimacy about them as they lure us in for a closer look. This is evident with children and their attraction to and like for toys. Toys in all their forms whether for children or adults are most likely to be miniatures of real size objects. They can often evoke a special memory or a warm feeling from deep within our souls, reminiscent of things from a time gone by. By comparison, modern day functional miniatures with their very compact size, such as the ever-smaller cell phone or an iPod, allow us more of a sense of manageability in our hectic and complex lives, assisting or entertaining us with just the simple push of a button.
Unlike in the real world, miniatures allow us to have almost anything we want. These unique tokens frequently elicit fond but perhaps long-forgotten memories from another era, allowing us to keep these memories alive and close to our hearts for years to come. With them we have the ability to create our own individual view of the world, both past and present, that we can share with friends and family alike. Up until recently with the advent of computer graphics, miniatures often played an important role in film as well. The Hollywood studios always employed miniatures, allowing them to create illusions of a real world that would otherwise be quite difficult if not impossible to achieve from life-size sets.
Historically, throughout the centuries and throughout a variety of cultures and religions, miniatures have served a variety of meanings and purposes. Miniature enthusiasts may be young or old, male or female, short or tall, and so on but, most importantly, all of them share a great affection for these wonderfully special little treasures. There are numerous groups, clubs and organizations that exist solely for the purpose of enjoying and promoting miniature collecting. Collections could easily range from the tiny professionally-bound published books to painted metal war figurines to special pieces of furniture, limited only by the collector's personal desires.
My rugs are individually hand-crafted and sewn to replicate the one-of-a-kind look and feel of either knotted, hooked or woven rugs. They each contain several thousand stitches per inch, thus easily enabling them to crossover into life size decorative fine art as well. My pieces may be framed and hung on the wall, placed framed on a table or shelf, or even placed in a miniature setting such as a doll house or room box. I create rug designs that are original as well as adapted from earlier styles, ranging from the primitive to the contemporary look. My work is also well suited for that special occasion such as a wedding where, for example, a traditional folk art design rug, personalized, could make a very unique and memorable gift for the happy couple. In addition to my own designs, I welcome custom work for portraits, birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and other special occasions.
